04/11/38 · Awaken the Shadowman is brief and yet still feels a bit padded. There are issues with some of the dialogue and pacing as well. While the story itself borrows from others, and a few subplots are not quite fleshed out enough, there’s enough here to make this a decent watch. Wilson shows great promise in his debut, putting together several well Adam receives a phone call from his estranged brother, Jake, informing him that their mother has gone missing. As the brothers try to get past old grievances and work together to find their mother, Adam becomes increasingly aware that their mother's bereavement group may be up to something sinister. And what is the Shadowman lurking in the darkness? In the end the actual Shadowman never takes any action as you would expect it to because this is one of those human darkness inside movies that just happens to have a shadow demon every now and again. It has an agenda that is never explained because the monster is incidental to this movie it is all about the insipid human players in the film. Bolstered by its generally strong performances, Awaken the Shadowman is so nicely unsettled in mood, assuredly paced (by Woodrow Wilson Hancock III), handsomely shot (again by J.S. Wilson, i.e. Hancock, Zimbardi and Caleb) and effectively scored (Douglas Pipes) that one wishes as much patient care had gone into the script. 17/09/38 · An intriguing prologue. A good story set-up. Jean Smart’s name flashing by in the opening credits. And a beautiful credit sequence, complete with music seemingly lifted from the library of the late, great Bernard Herrmann. 04/11/38 · “Awaken the Shadowman” contains a kooky cult, small town secrets, creepy dolls with ominous markings, a supernatural shadow person, and next to no explanation for how any of it adds together. End credits come with confusion over what the movie meant to do with its incomplete fiction other than introduce dangling mysteries with no resolutions. Awaken the Shadowman must be about the 47th movie I've watched recently where the villain's super power seems to be "having long fingers".
